An earthquake of 6.3 magnitude in Northern Thailand has damaged the fabulous White Temple in Chiang Rai beyond repair. Thai PBS reports that the earthquake, which struck the region on Monday night, has caused the roof bricks of the temple to collapse and seriously damaged the amazing mural paintings in the main temple.

Artist Ajaran Chalermchai Kositpipat, who has spend the past two decades creating the White Temple as his personal and artistic statement on a corrupt world, said the temple would have collapsed entirely if it had not been built from the beginning to resist earthquakes. But this was the strongest earthquake in the two decades since the temple construction was commenced.

The highway between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai has also been badly damaged by the earthquake, with parts of the road surface dropping by up to two metres and traffic reduced to one lane.
