If your shopping style runs more towards big, European style glossy shopping centres, then Platinum Fashion Mall in Bangkok, Thailand, might be right up your alley.
Platinum Fashion Mall is a stylish six-storey shopping complex with an equally stylish 11-storey apartment building above it. But the stores inside Platinum are small and independent, and operate on both a retail and a wholesale model – so if you’re only buying one of something you pay the retail price, but buy three or more and you get wholesale pricing – which can mean savings of up to 50% on the ticketed price. You don’t necessarily have to buy three of the same thing, just three things from the same store. For example, if a single item is priced at 250 Baht, you can probably buy three of the same for about double the price, 500 Baht.
Even if you’re not big on shopping for the latest fashions (and especially if you’re not and you’re significant other is), the 5th floor food court at Platinum Mall is worth a visit in its own right. As well as the local fare, you can cure your homesickness with a hit of KFC, Dunkin Donuts, Black Canyon Coffee (with a great Asian menu, by the way) or Swensens.
Even in a place as upmarket as this, you still need to choose your purchases carefully as there are some duds being sold (no pun intended). But generally the goods on sale here are top quality, very fashionable, somewhat edgy and reasonably cheap.
If you can’t find it in Platinum Mall, it’s probably not worth wearing – that include clothing, footwear, jewellery, bags, purses, wallets and more. But make sure you’re loaded up with cash as they don’t accept credit cards here.
Platinum Fashion Mall is located in New Phetchaburi Road in Ratchathewi District, right next door to Pantip Plaza and up the road from Pratunam Market. It’s open from 10 AM to 9 PM every day, but some of the stores open later and close earlier. The easiest way to get there is to take the BTS Skytrain to Rachathewi station, turn right as you come out and head down Phetchaburi Road, staying on the same side of the street as the station. It’s about 300 meters walk.
