Sarang Mas Kuala Lumpur (also called Sarang Vacation Homes or Sarang Mas BNB) is one of a set of terrace-style apartments located just off the bottom of the popular Bukit Bintang area of Kuala Lumpur. It’s not the best place we’ve ever stayed in and it’s not the worst, but for Kuala Lumpur it’s pretty good and very convenient. Sarang Mas is a 3 bedroom house. There is also Sarang Galloway which has 4 bedrooms, Sarang Rooms which has 3 bedrooms, and Sarange Mutiara which is a luxury studio apartment.
The problem with trying to find accommodation in Kuala Lumpur is that you’re either paying a fortune, your location is a taxi ride from anywhere vaguely interesting, or you’re likely to end up in a dump – maybe even a serious fire hazard dump. So we’re pretty careful when we book a place to stay in Malaysia’s busy capital city.
Anita, who manages Sarang Mas BNB, is one of the friendliest and most gracious hosts you’re ever likely to run into in your travels. Although we arrived much earlier than the allowed check-in time, Anita organised a breakfast of eggs, toast, juice, coffee and fruit for us while our room was being cleaned and prepared.
You will also meet Michael and Christina who own this and four or five other properties nearby – they have an office in the foyer of the adjoining terrace. Michael is very helpful with directions and organising transport and tours.
Our double room, at the top of a steep and narrow staircase, was nothing to rave about but had a comfortable bed, space to open up our bags and a window looking out over a dodgy courtyard. Also upstairs is a common room for guests with a television, coffee-making facilities, a fridge you can use to keep drinks and some lounges to sit around and read. Behind that is a shared bathroom with two or three cubicles containing a toilet, shower and wash basin. It sounds primitive, but in fact it works quite well. If you’re travelling as a group of 6 or so, you can book out the whole place to yourself.
Finding Sarang Mas BNB can be a little bit tricky. It’s located in a suburban back street behind the Swiss Garden Hotel near the bus stop and shops on Jalan Pudu. It’s an easy walk (although be careful crossing the road) to the bottom of Bukit Bintang along Jalan Imbi to the backpacker cafes and street food along Jalan Bintang. If you like walking, the grand shopping malls of Bukit Bintang are about one kilometre away up a gently sloping hill (easy walk home after dinner).
